The Chernobyl fire from space

Given the repeated fires that threatened the vicinity of the former Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine, ESA activated the Emergency Cartographic Service of the Copernicus program for monitoring.

The Sentinel-2 satellite was launched to monitor the evolution of the fires. But the situation did not go any further as a few days after the surrounding forests began to burn, heavy rains on April 15 extinguished most of the flames.

The greatest concern was that the fires could reach the old nuclear reactor and the radioactive waste deposit, as well as the risk of exposure to greater radiation due to the burning of contaminated forests and soils.

Despite the alarm, it is worth clarifying that the fires in the surroundings of Chernobyl are a seasonal phenomenon, although this year they have experienced a resurgence due to the dryness of the soil after a mild winter and a spring with less rain than normal in the area.
