When we talk aboutAcacia's honeyor properties of the acacia tree, we refer precisely to Robinia pseudoacacia.

Acacia: tree, leaves, flowers and fruits

ThereRobinia pseudoacacia, commonly calledacacia or black locust, is a plant of the Fabaceae family (legumes), native to North America and naturalized in Europe and well spread in Italy.

In particular, acacia woods can be found in Piedmont, where they cover a surprising surface of 85 thousand hectares. Very reproductive coppices are found in Lombardy, Veneto and Tuscany.

L'acacia tree reaches a height of up to 25 meters. It can also have a shrubby habit; in any case it is characterized by a very wrinkled light brown bark and imparipinnate leaves 30 - 35 cm long. The leaves, in reality, are made up of 11-21 smaller and non-toothed ovate leaflets up to 6 cm long, these leaflets are open during the day while at night they tend to overlap. The leaves are visible in the photo above.

THEacacia flowersthey are very decorative. They are white or cream colored, small and yellowed centrally. THEacacia flowersthey vaguely resemble sweet pea flowers.

THEflowersthey are about 2 cm long, gathered in hanging clusters and emit a pleasant scent with which they attract bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects.

Come onflowersgods are formedfruitspod-shaped, at first green in color and then, with maturation, they become brown. THEacacia fruitsthey are about 10 cm long and become dehiscent when ripe.

THEacacia flowersthey are edible, they are in fact eaten fried breaded in a sweet batter (water, flour and sugar).

Acacia, property

L'acaciait is known as a very useful medicinal plant in the field of natural remedies and phytotherapy. The extracts of the plant have an antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, astringent and antitumor activity.

The use of acacia leaves little room for do-it-yourself: the use is typically pharmaceutical as it is used for the production of emulsions and tablets. Much appreciated, for its nutritional and beneficial properties, is acacia honey.

Acacia's honey

Thanks to the abundance of its flowers, theacaciait's anectarification plantof considerable interest in the field ofbeekeeping.

TheAcacia's honeyit is undoubtedly one of the best known and most appreciated types of honey. It is the most common monoflora honey together with that of orange. The acacia honey marketed in Italy comes mainly from Eastern Europe and China.

Among its most appreciated properties it has a very low acidity index and a very delicate flavor. TheAcacia's honeyit does not undergo the crystallization process: it remains liquid regardless of the temperature! No other monoflora honey has the same properties. Acacia honey does not crystallize because it has a high fructose content compared to other sugars. Unlike orange honey or chestnut honey, theAcacia's honeyhowever, it provides low quantities of mineral salts and enzymes. Among the most important nutritional properties of acacia honey, we mention the high content of chrysin, a powerful flavonoid known for its ability to inhibit the growth of various types of malignant tumor. "Chrysin was found to be the most effective of all flavonoids tested, and was found to have an equal effect in potency to the drug.". Chrysin represents 50% of the secondary metabolites present inAcacia's honey.

Acacia, cultivation

Of the robinia pseudoacaciaVarious varieties have also spread, including those with high ornamental power. Acacia should be placed in not too humid environments and in soils rich in organic matter.
